Foundation news

Lyon, le 6 March 2014

The Synergie Lyon Cancer Foundation is profoundly grieved to announce the death of Prof Gilles Thomas on 23 February.
Former student at the elite Ecole Polytechnique, doctor of biochemistry and medicine, he practiced these skills as Director of Research at the CNRS, Professor of Genetics at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie of Paris and as Master of Research at the National Cancer Institute of Bethesda in the United States.
From 2008 onwards he held the Chair of Excellence in “Bioinformatics and cancer genetics” set up by Synergie Lyon Cancer at the initiative of HCL, CLB and UCBL1. For more than six years, Prof Gilles Thomas developed this centre dedicated to analysing the complex results of research on cancer genetics. The centre now has 14 research engineers. Thanks to his expertise and reputation, France was able to participate, via the National Cancer Institute, in international research programmes on cancer genome sequencing.
It was a great privilege for each of us to work alongside him. His exceptional human and scientific values inspired great respect from all his colleagues and our partners. We are sincerely grateful to him for his capacity to share his knowledge and passion with such generosity.
We shall continue with determination along the path he set out with so much enthusiasm.
