Lyonnais research present at ASCO 2014

Science and Research

“At the beginning of June 2014 the 50th congress of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) was held in Chicago, where more than 40,000 doctors and researchers went to present their results. Research against cancer is making progress. New therapeutic targets were unveiled, new therapeutic strategies explored, and new therapeutic paths are being studied. All this is very good news. Synergie Lyon Cancer is especially proud to have contributed its own small stone to this edifice. Synergie Lyon Cancer has been able to help French clinicians and doctors in this research, with innovative orientations for research including bioinformatics". J. P. Bizzari, President of the Synergie Lyon Cancer Foundation.

In 2014, ASCO took stock in particular of research in progress on:

•    innovative immunotherapies in cervical cancer and advanced and high risk melanomas;
•    very promising clinical studies on breast, prostate and colorectal cancers, providing better care for patients;
•    positive results from studies of targeted therapies in man on cancers difficult to treat like ovarian, lung and thyroid cancers.

The contributions to research of the Léon Bérard Centre

Three oncologists from the Léon Bérad Centre (CLB) participated in this gathering.

Dr Olivier Tredan presented the results of the AROBASE study, driven by GINECO (Group of National Investigators Studying Ovarian and Breast Cancers), on the advantages of hormone treatment given to patients with breast cancer.

Dr Maurice Pérol presented the results of the study of phase III, REVEL, which evaluates the effect of chemotherapy associated with targeted therapy in the treatment of metastatic lung cancers.

Dr Philippe Cassier presented the results of a study of phase 1 that permits testing the efficacy of a new antibody (anti-CSF1R) in the treatment of patients with advanced pigmented villonodular synovitis (pvNS), a rare tumour.

Founded by doctor members of the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR), ASCO is an unavoidable occasion for the international cancer research community to meet. It headlines the progress made in research and oncological treatments.
